Husky Athletes Win Some, Lose Some Last Week

It was essentially a break-even week for athletes at Mt. Hope High, who triumphed in soccer, tennis and volleyball.

fall sports teams enjoyed mixed results last week, with notable successes for the boys’ soccer, girls’ soccer, girls’ tennis and girls’ volleyball squads.

FOOTBALL

Mt. Hope suffered its second narrow loss in as many starts this fall, losing to host West Warwick High, 22-20, in its Division II-B opener. After battling the Wizards to a 7-7 deadlock at halftime, the Huskies surrendered 15 points in the third quarter, but roared back to score twice in the final chapter before coming up short.

Josh Hunt (fumble recovery in the endzone) and Kyle Valenzuela (19-yard run and 14-yard pass from Aaron Booth) scored touchdowns for Mt. Hope and Valenzuela also kicked two extra points.

BOYS’ SOCCER

Adam Guedes scored 2 second-half goals to lift the Huskies to a 2-0 Division II-North victory over Woonsocket High. Ricardo Melo and Adam Floor were credited with assists on the goals and Mt. Hope keeper Josh Zina rejected 6 shots.

GIRLS’ SOCCER

Mt. Hope battled East Providence High to a 0-0 stalemate in a Division II-Central clash. Goalie Vivian Ramos recorded 7 saves for the Huskies, who took 24 shots on goal without scoring.

Earlier, the Huskies won their second straight Division II-Central outing with a 6-1 thrashing of North Providence High. Mt. Hope enjoyed a 2-0 advantage at halftime and pulled away in the second half.

Felicia Vieira netted 2 goals for the Huskies and teammates Christie Ribeiro, Brooke Pacheco, Sarah Aubin and Angie Mascena all added 1 goal. Ribeiro also notched 3 assists and Taylor Perry and Kelsey Mitchell contributed 1 assist apiece.

The previous week, Mount Hope suffered a 5-4 Division II loss to Mt. St. Charles Academy of Woonsocket. Catherine Lopes drilled 3 goals for the Huskies and Vieira scored 1 goal, while Ramos amassed 8 saves in net.

GIRLS’ TENNIS

Mount Hope bowed to Rogers High of Newport, 5-2, in a Division II-South encounter. The Huskies were swept in the four singles’ matches, but won twice in doubles’ competitions behind No. 1 Brooke Spina-Marisa Silva (6-2, 6-2) and No. 2 Lauren Manuel-Kiana Thayer-Hanlon (6-3, 6-2).

Earlier, Mt. Hope’s modest two-match winning streak went by the boards when it dropped a 7-0 Division II-South decision to Tiverton High. The Huskies won just two sets in the contest – one by the No. 1 doubles’ tandem of Spina-Silva and the other by the No. 2 doubles’ unit of Manuel-Sarah Leger.

Also earlier, the Huskies had posted their second straight whitewashing when they blanked Hope High of Providence, 7-0, in a Division II-South outing, losing just seven games in the process. No. 1 Lauren Fletcher (6-0, 6-0), No. 2 Sophia Andreadis (6-0, 6-1), No. 3 Haley Ferreira (6-0, 6-0) and No. 4 Simone Verria (6-0, 6-0) all triumphed in singles’ matches as the Middletown’s doubles’ combinations of No. 1 Spina-Silva (6-0, 6-1), No. 2 Leger-Manuel (6-1, 6-4) and No. 3 Lilly Bedford-Michaela Pacheco (forfeit).

“Our girls played very well,” said Mt. Hope Coach Geoff Keegan. “This was the first match of the season for Hope and they had a lot of rookies playing, but our girls stayed played well.”

GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL

The Huskies cracked the win column for the first time this fall with a 3-0 blanking of Middletown High in a Division II tussle.

Earlier, Tiverton High rallied to pin a 3-2 Division II loss on the Huskies, winning the last two games. Mt. Hope lost by margins of 15-25, 28-26, 25-23, 20-25, 8-15.
