Mt. Hope Choir Spreads Love Around Bristol
Mt. Hope students serenade local residents for Valentine's Day.
Voices could be heard echoing down the hallways of Monday night. The sounds led directly to the choir room, which was still bursting with sound despite the time. The voices of students and parents could be heard amidst the singing and piano playing.
“Save your voices for the Valentine’s,” said Vicki Boyle, Chorus Director at the school.
The Mt. Hope High School chorus students had a very busy Valentine’s Day. They each took shifts going to homes around Bristol performing singing telegrams for Valentine’s Day. The telegrams serve as a fundraiser for the students.

“We do it every year,” said singer Angie Mascena. “It’s a fundraiser, we’re going to Florida.”
Telegrams can be bought for $20. The telegram consists of a medley of three songs including Build Me Up Buttercup by The Foundations. Chocolate and flowers can also be combined with the telegram for just an extra ten dollars.

“We show up at their house bunched up with a guitar and sing,” said Mascena. “It’s so adorable to see all of the spouses, it just makes you want to get married.”
Mascena and seven of her peers went to designated houses around Bristol accompanied by a chaperone. One of the deliveries was to the home of Edgardo and Rosemary Oliveria. Rosemary stood in shock as she opened the door to find a group of singing high school students. Her husband had bought the telegram as a surprise from their grandson who is also part of the chorus.
“This was really, really nice,” said Rosemary Oliveria. “One of my best Valentine’s. I really enjoyed it.”
According to students, there is no better way to make Valentine’s Day special then to spread love and joy around to everyone you know.
“It makes you happy to bring joy into peoples lives,” said singer Troy Durand.
In the eyes of the students the fundraiser was a success. They were thrilled with the happiness they could spread to family, friends, and residents of Bristol and hope to do it again next year.
