Mt. Hope Swimmers Triumph Over Warwick Vets, 63-28

The Mt. Hope girls' swim team was untouchable in the meet against the Warwick Vets on Wednesday, Dec. 22.

The girls' swim team dominated the pool during Wednesday's meet against Warwick.Ā 

Going into the meet, Head Coach Jonathan Dell did not seem worried.Ā 

"We were nervous at first, but Warwick doesn't have a full squad here," said Dell, pointing out that the Vets only had nine competitors for the team. "But we never know what we are running into. This is our first time back in Division III in three years."

Katie Floor, Brooke Pacheco, Lindsey Aguiar and Abigale Mlynek led the team to their first seven points in the meet, placing first in the 200 medley relay. Katie Floor placed second and Brooke Pacheco placed third in the 200 IM, and Sophia Andreadis scored first place points for the team in the 50 freestyle.Ā 

By the break, Mt. Hope was already up 16 points with a score of 25 to 9.Ā

In the second half, juniors Lindsey Aguiar and Kiley Quinn racked up points in the 100 butterfly. For Quinn, it was her first chance to shine in the event. In the 100 freestyle, Tori Decheres took the lead again with a time of 1:04:72, and Brooke Pacheco took second. Rookie Lucy Spence also took first in the 500 freestyle with a time of 7:46:09.

According to Dell, many athletes beat their personal best times during the meet, including Sophia Andreadis (junior) in the 50 and 100 free,Ā Diana Camara (senior, captain) in the 50 free,Ā Makeala Impagliazzo (junior) in the 50 and 100 back,Ā Brooke Pacheco (junior) in the 200 IM, Jaimee Walsh (sophomore) in the 200 free and 100 breast, andĀ Tori Deschenes (senior, captain) in the 200 free, 100 free, and 50 free.

Taking first in the 200 freestyle with a time of 2:25:03, Deschenes lit up with excitement.

"I dropped four seconds!" she exclaimed as she high-fived Coach Dell.

In that event, Deschenes beat her last meet time by four seconds and her personal best time by a whole second.Ā 

"I think I'm going to do 200 free a lot more this season," said Deschenes.Ā 

After the meet, Dell stated that he felt fantastic about the results.Ā 

"The kids are hitting fantastic times already," he said. "Bodes well for the rest of the season."

The boys and girls teams get to relax over the holidays, then will return to face North Providence High School on Jan. 3, at North Providence library pool.
