Murder Charges Brought Against Grandson

Bristol police say they have charged Raymond Paiva with the murder of Eudora Gustafson, 66, of Bristol.

BRISTOL, RI — Raymond Paiva, 24, of Bristol, has been charged with murder in the death of Eudora Gustafson, Chief Josue D. Canario of the Bristol Police Department said Tuesday.

Bristol Police have been investigating Gustafson's death since she was found deceased at her residence on Sowams Drive on Feb. 10.

Providence police confirmed he is her grandson, according to news sources. He was living at her address on Sowams Drive, Bristol police indicated.

Bristol police obtained an arrest warrant for Paiva, as a result of findings in the investigation into Gustafson’s death. He was arraigned Tuesday in his hospital room.

He is being treated for a gunshot wound suffered when a Providence police officer captured him after a chase near Charles Street and Branch Avenue on Friday night.

Custody of Paiva was transferred from the Bristol Police Department to the Rhode Island Sheriff’s Department, the chief said. He will be held at the Adult Correctional Institutions after he's discharged from Rhode Island Hospital at a date not yet determined.

At this time, Eudora Gustafson’s cause of death is pending results from the Office of the State Medical Examiner.
