Obituary: August S. "Augie" Almeida, 94, Champion Boxer

Mr. August S. "Augie" Almeida, age 94 formerly of Bristol and Thomaston, CT, died Saturday, June 27, 2015 at Bayberry Commons in Pascoag.

Mr. August S. ā€œAugieā€ Almeida, age 94 formerly of Bristol and Thomaston, CT, died Saturday, June 27, 2015 at Bayberry Commons in Pascoag.

Born in Sao Miguel, Azores, and raised in Bristol, he was the son of the late August S. and Evarista (Calisto) Almeida. Augie served in the Merchant Marines during WWII in both the Pacific and European Theaters. He was an Rhode Island and New England Amateur Light Weight Boxing Champion.

He was a foreman for many years at the Plume and Atwood Company in Thomaston, CT until retiring a number of years ago. He was an avid bowler for many years.

He is survived by a son, August Almeida (Lori) of Barrington, four grandchildren, August Almeida, Brent Almeida, Brittany DiOrio and Craig Bozzario, two great grandchildren, Hayden Marie DiOrio and Drew August DiOrio, and three brothers, Joseph S. Almeida of Hollywood, FL, Gilbert S. Almeida (Madeline) and Benjamin S. Almeida (Rita), both of Bristol. In addition to his parents, he was preceeded in death by a daughter, Linda Bozzario, brothers, Arthur S. and Edward S. Almeida and sisters, Mary Soares and Theresa Lopes.
