Obituary: Elvona (Gilman) Tavares

The former Bristol resident will be laid to rest Tuesday, Oct. 16.


Mrs. Elvona "Vonie" Mary (Gilman) Tavares, 89 of Military Street, Houlton, ME, formerly of Roma Street, Bristol, died peacefully, Sunday, Oct. 7, at Houlton Regional Hospital in Maine.

She was the wife of the late James Tavares. Born and raised in Bancroft, ME, she was the daughter of the late Halcott A. and Alice E. (Irish) Gilman. She had been a Bristol resident for 62 years before moving to Houlton, ME. She worked for the former Bristol Manufacturing Company for 10 years, retiring in 1985. She was a communicant of St. Elizabeth's Church, Bristol and she loved cooking, knitting, sewing and music.Ā 

She is survived by two sisters, Daisy Deering of Orient, ME, Marlene Potter of Drew Plantation, ME, a brother Halcott Gilman of New York; three sisters-in-law, Irene Frye of Ohio, Hilda Mindyas of Texas and Julie Travasso of Bristol; and many nieces and nephews. Besides her husband and parents, she was preceded in death by a brother, Fred Gilman, and two sisters, Hallie Graham and Faye Hersom.Ā

Funeral Services from the Sansone Funeral Home, 192 Wood St., Bristol, are scheduled for Tuesday, Oct. 16, 2012 at 10 a.m. with a graveside service at 11 a.m. in St. Mary's Cemetery, Chestnut Street.
