Roger Williams Sports Teams Show Their Hawks Pride

Roger Williams University held its Spring pep rally on Wednesday. The Campus Entertainment Network hosted the event and added an Irish twist.

Students filed into the Recreation Center to show their hawks pride for the 2011 Spring pep rally. Inside the gym spotlights swung side to side and the Dropkick Murphys blared from the speakers.

St. Patrick’s Day was the inspiration for this years pep rally. The Campus Entertainment Network (CEN) took advantage of this popular holiday to bring in the campus community.

“We thought it would attract a lot of people,” said Briana Lion, Freshman CEN member.

Tables were strewn with cookies and chocolate pennies. Shamrocks hung on the walls and shamrock streamers hung down from the main doors. Many students walked around adorned with green shirts and leprechaun hats showing off their school spirit. Beside the door, a large blow up leprechaun stood beside as the evenings mascot.

“We chose this because it is the week after and we’re not here for St. Patrick’s Day,” said Lion.

The night started off with a number from the dance team and was followed by the National Anthem, which was sung by the new acapella group on campus.

The Emcees began by announcing all the sports teams one by one. As they were each called, they approached center stage. Team captains introduced themselves and announced upcoming games and current victories.

“Roger forever, forever Roger,” shouted CEN members.

Accompanied by the roar of the crowd, CEN members would occasionally run out to the audience throwing souvenirs including t-shirts that said “Kiss Me I’m A Hawk.”

To add to the Irish theme there were contests such as who could do the best Irish Jig, Lucky Charms eating contest, and raffles for the Celtics and other tickets.

The pep rally was the first event to kick off the Campus Entertainment Networks March Meltdown. The events will continue throughout the week and finally come to a conclusion on Sunday with the comedy event, Last Hawk Standing.
