Severe Winter Weather Expected to Dump Over a Foot of Snow

As southeastern New England braces for hazardous blizzard-like snowfall with upwards of 20 inches of snow in some areas, Bristol and Warren are projected to be hit with about 12 to 16 inches of snowfall Sunday through Monday and blustery winds of up to about 44 miles per hour, according to the National Weather Service Sunday morning.

Snowfall is expected to last Sunday afternoon through Monday evening, according to the NWS forecasts. Heavy snows are expected to begin after noontime Sunday with a high temperature of near 37 degrees. A northeast wind of 11 to 14 miles per hour is predicted to increase to between 20 and 23 mph. Weather forecasters are projecting total daytime snow accumulation this afternoon of 1 to 3 inches.

Tonight, a mix of heavy rain and snow is expected to turn into all snow after 3 a.m. when the low temperatures drop to around 31 degrees. Heavy winds are expected to continue between 29 and 34 mph, with gusts as high as 44 mph.  Two to four inches of snow are expected to fall overnight.

The snow is likely to continue Monday up to 2 p.m. with a high temperature near 33 degrees and winds between 25 and 31 mph, and gusts as high as 43 mph. Another 1 to 3 inches of snow is expected to fall Monday.

The National Weather Service is forecasting clear skies by Monday night with a low temperature around 17 degrees, a blustery northwest wind between 21 and 25 mph, and gusts as high as 43 mph. 

The NWS advises residents to have the following items on hand in anticipation of hazardous, blizzard conditions:

• Flashlight and extra batteries
• Bottled water.
• Essential medications.
• Canned goods and a manual can opener.
• A first aid kit.
• Sufficient heating fuel.
• A working fire extinguisher.
• Salt and sand.
• A battery powered radio.

• Keep a shovel in the trunk or vehicle in case the tires need to be shoveled out.
• Keep an emergency blanket in the car.
• Make sure the car had adequate fuel.
• Keep extra water and food in the car.
• Keep an emergency kit in the car that includes jumper cables, a road flare and help flag.
• In the event the car becomes stranded, make sure the tail pipe is kep clear.
