Student Writers Showcase Work at Poetry Slam

Five Mt. Hope High School Students came home with prizes for their poetry on Wednesday evening.

On Wednesday, Jan. 25, dozens of students participated in the second annual Poetry Slam.

Students performed their touching, humorous and deep lyrical works and were judged by several teachers from the school.

While many expected three students to take the top three prizes, judge calculations provided five students to receive awards for their work.

Cody Stanzione and Daniel Simonds tied for third place. Damien Jiminez took second place for his rhythmic rap piece, and Camerin Martins and Andrea Pereira tied for first place.

Scoring was based on creativity, originality and figurative language within the content, and the overall style, sound, rhythm and articulation of the performance.

"[The winners] will all receive certificates and first place will receive a small cash prize and second place will get an i-tunes gift card," Mastriano said.

Mastriano says two out of the five students were in her Music Literature course, which is the course that benefits from all of the event's proceeds. Profits made from the raffle, bake sale and ticket sales will go into an account to be used to help pay for a field trip in the spring.

"I'm very pleased with how it went," Mastriano said. "This definitely sealed the deal that we'll continue doing the Poetry Slam every year now."
