Thames St. Odor is Roof Resurfacing, Not Gas Leak, Bristol Police Say

Bristol police and firefighters have received reports of a gas-like odor in the Thames St. area.

BRISTOL, RI—Local authorities have received numerous reports of an odor resembling natural gas near the Robin Rug building on Thames St., but the smell is actually from a roof resurfacing project, police say.

"The owners of the Robin Rug building are resurfacing the roof on the building with hot tar; this process has been known to create an odor in the downtown area, which has been known to be carried with the wind as far as the area of the Bristol Town Common," police said in a post to their Facebook page.

"The Bristol Police Department in conjunction with The Bristol Fire Department and National Grid Gas have all been notified of this, and confirm that the odor in question is being generated from the roof resurfacing project on Thames St.," police said. "At this time, there is no danger to the general public regarding a gas leak, and we are sharing this information with the general public to make you aware of the scenario."
