BRISTOL, RI — Bristol was named the safest town in Rhode Island, according to the 2023 State of Safety in America ranking from Safewise.com.

The report was released last week and named the safest cities in the country, based on crime rates and other data from the Federal Bureau of Investigation.

This is the third consecutive year Bristol has taken the top slot. In 2021, Bristol was named the safest for the first time, after coming in second place behind South Kingstown.

Here's a look at the cities and towns that made up the rest of the top 10.

  3. North Kingstown
  4. Cumberland
  5. Smithfield
  6. Westerly
  7. North Providence
  8. Coventry
  9. East Providence
  10. Warwick

The Ocean State was ranked one of the safest in the country, coming in at seventh lowest nationwide for violent crime and sixth lowest for property crime. In the last year, the state reported 2.3 violent crimes per 1,000 people, which is well below the national average.

Despite this, Rhode Island residents are more concerned about their safety than the average American, SafeWise said. According to the report, 42 percent of residents said their state is a safe place to live, a 22 percent drop from 2022.

The majority of Rhode Islanders said they were most concerned they will be a victim of package theft.
