Week in Sports: Huskies Thrive in Some Games, Struggle in Others
Last week was one of mixed results for fall sports teams at Mt. Hope High, which recorded notable successes in football, girls' soccer and cross-country.
In a week of mixed results among the school’s fall sports teams, the football and girls’ soccer squads at posted impressive victories, while the Huskies’ boys’ cross-country and girls’ cross-country combines both split tri-meets.
FOOTBALL
Mt. Hope posted its first victory of the season by whipping visiting Ponaganset Regional of Foster-Glocester, 37-7, in a Division II-B clash, on Sunday. The Huskies are now 1-1 in league play and 1-2 overall.

BOYS’ SOCCER
Tolman High of Pawtucket zoomed to a five-goal edge by halftime en route to a convincing 6-0 Division II-North victory over Mt. Hope last Monday, Sept. 19. Husky goalie Josh Zina stopped 5 shots.

GIRLS’ SOCCER
Mt. Hope ran roughshod over Tolman High of Pawtucket, dominating from start to finish while posting a 7-0 Division II-Central victory last Thursday. Carmen Hogan and Taylor Perry both netted 2 goals for the Huskies; Christie Ribeiro, Catherine Lopes and Kelsey Mitchell all added 1 goal; Ribeiro recorded 2 assists while Brooke Pacheco, Lopes and Angie Mascena all contributed 1 assist; and keeper Vivian Ramos registered a shutout with 8 saves.
GIRLS’ TENNIS
Mt. Hope captured the No. 1 singles’ and doubles’ matches, but nothing else, while falling to Warwick Vets High, 5-2, in a Division III-South affair last Thursday. Lauren Fletcher (6-3, 6-3) won in singles’ for the Huskies as did their No. 1 doubles’ tandem of Marisa Silva-Brooke Spina (6-3, 3-6, 6-4).
Earlier in the week on Monday, Sept. 19, Pilgrim High of Warwick pinned a 6-1 Division III-South loss on Mt. Hope. The Huskies triumphed at No. 3 singles’ with Haley Ferreira (6-3, 6-4).
GIRLS’ VOLLEYBALL
Undefeated Exeter-West Greenwich Regional stormed past Mt. Hope, 3-0 (25-10, 25-6, 25-10) in a Division II-South tussle last Wednesday. Meanwhile, Barrington High beat Mt. Hope 3-1 on Friday.
BOYS’ CROSS-COUNTRY
The Huskies split a pair of Metro Division races on a 3.1-mile course at Colt State Park last Monday, Sept. 19, out-distancing Shea High of Pawtucket (17-44), but falling to Barrington High (15-48). Mt. Hope’s Branden Paulino concluded sixth overall in 18:37 and James Stanley was ninth in 19:10.
GIRLS’ CROSS-COUNTRY
Mt. Hope salvaged a split in Metro Division contests last Monday, Sept. 19, defeating Shea and losing to Barrington by identical 15-50 tallies. Husky Meghan Rainville crossed the finish line ninth overall in 22:17 and Katarina Heyden was 10th in 22:26.
