Rhode Island residents may find a reminder of the upcoming holiday season on their front doors this Halloween weekend, as Scouts prepare to launch the Narragansett Council's annual Scouting for Food drive.
On Saturday, October 31, Scouts will distribute door hangers in participating neighborhoods to let residents know they will return the following weekend to collect food donations.
Scouting for Food is the Narragansett Council's largest community service event of the year. The drive collects nonperishable food for the Rhode Island Community Food Bank and its member agencies throughout the state.
Residents who receive a door hanger are asked to leave bagged or boxed nonperishable food donations outside their front doors, or at the location where the hanger was placed, by 9 a.m. Saturday, November 7.
Scouts will return that morning to collect donations and deliver them to the Food Bank or a local pantry.
The key dates are:
Residents who are unsure what to donate can consult the list of most-needed food items.
People whose neighborhoods are not participating can still support the effort by making a donation through the Narragansett Council's website.
The annual drive gives Rhode Islanders a simple way to help stock local food pantries and support families facing food insecurity as the holiday season approaches.
