Coventry firefighters responded to a fire at a bakery on Monday morning.

COVENTRY, RI — The Coventry firefighters responded to a fire Monday morning at Borrelli's Bakery on Tiogue Road. According to Chief Frank Brown, the incident commander, the fire started around 9:48 a.m. The Hopkins Hill and Central Coventry fire districts and Anthony Fire Station responded.
No one was injured, and the fire damage to the brick building was minor, he said. But it was a labor-intensive fire due to the fact it started in a 4,000 pound oven. The oven fire, which was "probably a grease fire in the oven," he said, extended into the structure. Firefighters could not move the oven out of the way and so had to battle the fire from the basement and work up to the area where the building was involved.
Most of the damage came from smoke and water, he said. The firefighters did a good job putting the fire out. It took only five to 10 gallons of water to extinguish the fire, he said.

Brown was not sure how long the bakery would stay closed.
"The building inspector wanted the oven removed," he said, so he could assess the section of the building where the fire had reached. The electrical inspector also had to be consulted.
