CHS Alumni Hall of Fame Inductees - 2016

Hall of Fame inductee for 2016

The Coventry High School Alumni Association would like to announce its inductees for 2016 for the Coventry High School Alumni Hall of Fame:

1. Linda Rekas Sloan, Esq. '87

A lawyer by profession, Linda Rekas Sloan has served on or chaired a number of committees for the RI Bar Association. A member of the Executive Committee since 2008, Linda served as Secretary in 2014-2015 and Treasurer in 2015-2016. Currently, Linda is also a member of the New England Bar Association, Board of Directors where she has served since 2013.

As a strong supporter of community service, Linda has been a member and officer of the Pawtuxet Valley Rotary Club since 1999 where she has been a catalyst for many community service projects. She also served on the advisory board for Camp E-Hun-Tee, a camp for at risk kids. Finally, Linda also has served on the West Greenwich Town Council since 2014. Her tremendous contributions of service to her profession and to her community qualify her for the CHS Alumni Hall of Fame.

2. Kenneth Alan Sorensen '62

Kenneth Sorensen has been employed for over 36 years as a professional entomologist. As an undergraduate student, he was Assistant Apiculture Inspector in Rhode Island. He also worked summers as a survey entomologist. In graduate school at Kansas State University, he was the beekeeper specialist who assisted the plant breeders and gave leadership in educational programs on honeybees and pollination. He also assisted his major professor with projects on trees, shrubs, and turf grasses.

He has been at North Carolina State University as an Extension Entomologist since 1970 working on fruits and vegetables. He has international experience in Bolivia, Ecuador, Nepal, and India and has traveled around the world. His amazing career qualifies him for the CHS Alumni Hall of Fame.

3. Rev. Anne Robertson '76

Anne Robertson has brought honor to CHS through her efforts as a minister and author. An active student at Coventry High, Anne was a member of the German Club, the Student Council, and was very active in her church. 7th out of a class of over 400 students and the recipient of the Ardis Barbour Award, Anne went on to study at Bucknell University, Wheaton College, and finally went on to Candier School of Theology at Emory University in Atlanta to study to become a minister. She became a minister of the United Methodist Church at age 33. She is also the Executive Director of the Massachusetts Bible Society where she has published many significant works and series regarding the Bible and its influences on society. She continues to lecture around the country as a well-respected authority in her field. Anne is very worthy of Hall of Fame recognition.

4. Julie Lima Boyle '90

Julie Lima Boyle had an active career at Coventry High as a student and now is an amazing English teacher. A summa cum laude graduate of Rhode Island College, Julie began her teaching career at Coventry High School in 1994 and has evolved into a creative, energetic and talented teacher who has served on many committees at the state and national level.

Named RI Teacher of the Year in 2012, Julie has attended Space Camp in Alabama, was a Common Core Ambassador, worked with Sandra Day O’Connor on i-Civics Project, and worked on many other educational initiatives. Julia has brought recognition to CHS through her extraordinary achievements and is a true Oaker who is deserving of Hall of Fame recognition.

5. The Falcon Drill Team 1989 - 2016

Over a period of more than 25 years, the Falcon Drill Team represented Coventry High School in regional and national drill competitions. The drill team entered many competitions and was named Air Force National Drill Champions in 2002, 2003, 2004, 2005, 2006, 2008, and 2009. The Drill Team was advised by M-Sgt. Richard Lebel, William Dudley, Gina Studley, M-Sgt. Marc Boulay, and James Portras. These advisors helped the drill team to focus on different aspects of drill. The team continued to receive first place trophies numerous times in regional competitions most recently in the 2015-16 season. This group and their advisors brought much honor and recognition to CHS. Their efforts have resulted in the Falcon Drill team being named to the CHS Alumni Hall of Fame.

These candidates will be inducted into the CHS Alumni Hall of Fame on Thursday, November 3rd at the Quidnessett Country Club in North Kingstown. A reception will begin at 6 PM with dinner at 7 PM.
