Coventry Police Encourage Residents, Businesses To Register Security Cameras
When a crime occurs, officers will be able to identify registered cameras near the location of the incident and get help from the community.
COVENTRY, RI — The Coventry Police Department is encouraging residents and business owners to join its camera registration program.
The program enables residents and business owners to register the locations of their video surveillance systems with the Coventry Police Department.
When a crime occurs, officers will be able to identify registered cameras near the location of the incident and enlist the assistance of the community in gathering video evidence to follow up on leads. Registrants may be asked to check their video surveillance system for a specific date and time. If necessary, police may request a copy of any video captured by the camera, which can assist in the investigation of a crime.

Registration is voluntary, and the program is free. Police said registering a camera does not provide Coventry police with direct access to the camera.
Personal information will be kept confidential by the department unless subject to disclosure by court order, police said. Information will only be accessed by law enforcement who are investigating a crime in the vicinity of the camera's location.
