Crowdfunding Campaign Launched after RI's Tall Ship Topples in Blizzard
The ship toppled over while in dry dock in Newport during this week's blizzard. The goal is to raise $900,000.

The crew of Tall Ship Providence have launched a crowdfunding campaign to raise $900,000 after the replica of John Paul Jones’ famous warship toppled over in blizzard conditions at Newport Shipyard on Tuesday and suffered extensive damage.
Though insurance will cover most of the damage, “there is much insurance does not cover; month’s of opportunity and profit gain for the ship as she repairs as well as the need to continue generating funds for the development of even stronger programing in educational, sail training, historical tours, leisure and entertainment for the months after she is launched,” said Nichole Raab, crew member.
Tall Ship Providence is Rhode Island’s Flagship and Tall Ship Ambassador and was rescued by owner Thorpe Leeson in 2011 when he bought the vessel from the state, vowing to get her back in the water. It had been sitting on land for four years after her previous owners lost funding.

“Thorpe rescued the Providence before and he can do it again,” according to the campaign statement. “With the recent devastating news, as many watch… this moment gives this unique trio a chance to succeed while bringing the ship back to life.”
The vessel is a 110 foot fully rigged replica of John Paul Jones’ famous warship that sank or captured 40 British ships during the American Revolutionary War.

Sloop Providence was the first ship commissioned into the Continental Navy and the first Command of John Paul Jones.
The replica was built in 1976 for the bicentennial and “remains an icon and symbol that excites crowds today,” according to www.tallshipprovidence.com.
Her home port is in Newport and she spends time on Tall Ship Tours up the coast when she’s not bringing 18th century American history to life for visitors.
She has also appeared in two of Disney’s Pirates of the Caribbean movies.
Larger contributions will afford donors a chance to earn a night aboard with family and friends, a dockside private party or a private day of sailing with family and friends.
