Explosion in Tent Deemed Suspicious

A man suffered burns after an explosion in a tent at Water's Edge Campground in Coventry on Saturday.

The Coventry Police department is investigating a explosion that occurred inside a tent at Waters Edge Campground on Saturday.

Fire officials have determined that the cause of the explosion was suspicious and a young man in his 20s was transported to the hospital for burns to his face, hands and an arm.

Authorities said the call came in at around 3:30 p.m. Though there was an explosion in the tent, there was no fire, leading officials to believe the explosion was caused by gas of some kind. The victim’s burns were caused by the flash fire.

The victim suffered second- and third-degree burns and is expected to survive his injuries.

Crews from the Central Coventry Fire District responded to the scene and the town and state fire marshal are investigating.

Water’s Edge Campground is located off Peckham Lane and was formerly named Colwell’s Campground.
