Fossils of Rhode Island

Museum of Natural History Adult Programs

Monday, December 8, 2014 2:00pm-3:00pm

Some of Rhode Island’s greatest hidden treasures are the fossils found within its borders. Few think of Rhode Island or New England in general as being rich in fossils. Connecticut and Massachusetts do have their dinosaurs, in Vermont and Maine there are areas teeming with ancient marine life, but the Ocean State is rich in Carboniferous flora like nowhere else in New England. We’ll start on the ancient shores of Avalonia, travel to Coal Age swamps, and finish with the retreat of the last sheets of ice.
