Mary Poppins Jr. Flying Into Coventry This Weekend

COVENTRY, R.I. -- Alan Shawn Feinstein Middle School's drama club will perform "Mary Poppins Jr," on March 8 at 6:30 p.m. and March 9 at 1 p.m. and 6:30 p.m.

The musical is a middle-school level adaptation of the Broadway show, Disney film and classic P.L. Travers books. The cast includes 60 students between the ages of 11 and 13, directed by Lisa Lachange and Lori Lebrun. The cast is also supported by a variety of volunteers made up of other teachers and members of the community.

“We are thrilled to be able to present a musical that is near and dear to our hearts, since we grew up singing these songs,” said Lachance, a sixth grade English-Language Arts teacher at the school.

The show follows the classic story or Mary Poppins, the magical nanny who flies into the life of the Banks family. It features classic Sherman brothers songs from the Disney film, including "Supercalifragilisticexpialidocious," "Feed The Birds," and "A Spoonful of Sugar," along with other additions.

“[The show is] even more popular now, thanks to the new movie Mary Poppins Returns, which many of the students have now seen,” said LeBrun, a counselor at ASFMS and former elementary school teacher for three decades in the district.
