Oh Happy Day: Rhode Island Ranked in Top Ten Most Emotionally Balanced States

More than 60 percent of Rhode Island residents take time to relax – leaving the state one of the most "emotionally recharged," a study finds

If you’ve taken time out of your busy schedule to hang out with your grandma, learn how to paint or volunteer at the local animal shelter, then you’re considered “emotionally balanced.”

And you’re likely not the only emotionally balanced person on your street.

A new study from Lantern, a web platform that aims to help people improve their emotional well-being, claims Rhode Island as one of the most “emotionally recharged” states. This means more Rhode Island residents take time to improve their well being than residents in most other states.

Rhode Island ranked as the ninth most emotionally recharged state, tying with Oklahoma and New Jersey.

To create the Lantern Emotional Balance Index, the company surveyed more than 3,000 people over two weeks between Dec. 26, 2014 and Jan. 9, 2015.

During those two weeks, a projected 65 percent of Rhode Island residents reported regularly taking the time to “learn something new, share a moment of closeness with a loved one, have a meaningful conversation with a friend, do a good deed for someone else, or engage in other activities that help them truly rest, recharge, and unwind,” according to the study.

The top 5 most emotionally recharged states are: New Hampshire, Indiana, Louisiana, Kansas and Arkansas. Utah residents, according to the report, have the worst personal well being, with only 40 percent of residents claiming they take time to relax.

Massachusetts ranked seventh on the study’s list of least emotionally recharged states, with only 44 percent of people claiming they take time for themselves. Connecticut fared better, ranking number 15 on the list of most emotionally recharged states.
