RI Drivers: 1 In 4 Would Flee An Accident If They Thought They Could Get Away With It

A new survey finds 25 percent of Rhode Island drivers say they would not stop after an accident if they thought police wouldn't catch them.

COVENTRY, RI — A new survey from Cheap Car Insurance says one in four Rhode Island drivers would not stop after an accident if they thought they could get away with it. The survey polled 2,028 Americans to see how people really feel about the traffic regulations, such as drinking and driving, leaving the scene and carrying insurance. According to the results, in Kentucky, only 2.7 percent of the drivers surveyed said they wouldn't stop of they hit another car (if police wouldn't be able to catch them). By contrast, one in four Rhode Islanders said they'd flee, and 30.6 percent of South Carolina drivers said the same.

As far as click it or ticket, the survey found the campaign is a hard sell in the ocean state. According to the numbers, "50% of Rhode Island drivers feel seat belts should be optional."

The survey also asked drivers about drugged and drunk driving. Looking at the responses nationwide, more than one in four drivers under the age of 34 would drive high if it weren't illegal and one in five between 24 and 44 would drive drunk.
