In John Ford’s 1956 film starring John Wayne, a former Confederate soldier returns to his brother's frontier cabin three years after the end of the Civil War with a bitter hatred of Indians, trusting no one but himself. John Wayne remarkably portrays a man incapable of answering to anyone but himself, who ultimately has more in common with his despised Indians than with his more ‘civilized’ brethren.
