Serious Accident Knocks Out Power in Coventry, EG

A car smashed into a pole on JP Murphy Highway in West Warwick, knocking out power across Kent County.

A serious accident on James P. Murphy Industrial Highway in West Warwick knocked out power to nearly 600 National Grid electricity customers in Coventry and East Greenwich at around 11:30 p.m. on New Year’s Eve.

West Warwick firefighters extricated two people from a car that crashed into a telephone pole and both victims were transported to area hospitals.

The crash caused live high-tension wires to fall onto the vehicle and firefighters had to work carefully to free the victims from the wreckage.

National Grid has responded to the scene.

The cause of the accident remains under investigation.

National Grid reported 390 customers in Coventry and 43 in East Greenwich were still without power as of 12:30 a.m. The outage reportedly reached as far as the Covenry Walmart.

An additional 166 customers were without power in West Warwick.
