Snow Will Bring 6 to 10 Inches, Extreme Cold

A blizzard warning is in effect for Newport and Washington Counties. Residents are being warned to stay off the roads later this afternoon.

Yet another major winter storm is on the way Saturday and residents are advised to get off the roads this afternoon.

Most of Rhode Island is expected to get 8 to 10 inches of snow beginning Saturday afternoon and after a lull Saturday night, it will intensify and bring blizzard conditions to southern Rhode Island and parts of the coast, according to the National Weather Service.

The blizzard warning is in effect for Newport and Washington Counties, including Block Island. Otherwise, Rhode Island is under a WInter Storm Warning.

Winds of 25 to 35 mph with gusts of up to 60 mph are expected. Wind chills are expected to fall to 25 below zero.

“Travel will become nearly impossible and potentially life-threatening due to white-out conditions and bitterly cold wind chills. Conditions will remain dangerous for travel well into Sunday due to blowing and drifting show. Reduced visibility and dangerously cold wind chills. Power outages can be expected at some locations due to very strong winds,” warned the NWS.

This storm may not produce the amount of snow that we’ve seen from other storms in the past three weeks, but this latest storm will likely exasperate snow-related problems.

Here is the hour-by-hour snow forecast from The Weather Channel:

  • 2 p.m. to 4 p.m. Saturday -- Snow showers
  • 4 p.m. 10 p.m. Saturday -- Snow
  • 10 p.m. Saturday -- Light snow
  • 11 p.m. Saturday to 2 a.m. Sunday -- Snow showers
  • 2 a.m. Sunday to 1 p.m. Sunday -- Blizzard
  • 1 p.m. Sunday -- Thunder snow/wind
  • 2 p.m. Sunday to 4 p.m. Sunday -- Snow showers/wind

Snow should end by late afternoon Sunday, but the dangerous wind chills and blowing and drifting snow are expected until Monday morning.
