Text Scammers Posing As Coventry Officers: Police

COVENTRY, RI — Coventry police urged the public to be on the lookout for texts from scammers posing as local police departments.

Coventry police said the scammers are falsely claiming to be selling merchandise to benefit the department. An example of the scam can be found below:

"Tis the season for scammers to scam," Coventry police said in a statement. "Please do not click on any link from any police department in a text. We have been told that it appears our agency and several others have sent out a similar text. We have not and we are not selling anything. Please be safe and use caution with these types of texts and emails."
