COVENTRY, RI — Rhode Island residents are advised to avoid contact with Warwick's Little Pond after a toxic blue-green algae bloom was found in the water, the Rhode Island Departments of Health and Environmental Management said in a joint release. Coming into contact with the affected water can cause skin irritation and gastrointestinal issues.

All water recreation including fishing, swimming, boating and kayaking should be avoided in the pond, also known as Sandy Pond. Pets are also at risk and should not be allowed to drink or swim in the water.

If it gets on the skin, the algae can cause irritation of the skin, nose, eyes and/or throat. Drinking the water can cause nausea, vomiting, upset stomach or diarrhea. Young children and pets are especially at risk.
