USTA FOUNDATION AWARDS $373,000 IN COLLEGE SCHOLARSHIPS

Local High School Seniors to Receive Scholarships Towards Continuing Their Education

WHITE PLAINS, N.Y. – USTA Foundation, the national charitable foundation of the United States Tennis Association, has announced that three high school students were awarded either an $8,000 College Educational Scholarship or a $1,000 College Textbook Scholarship. The Foundation granted 53 high school students nationwide a variety of college scholarships this spring, totaling $373,000.

The USTA Foundation has awarded Abigail James of Coventry R.I. with the College Educational Scholarship. James, a graduate from Coventry High School, will be attending Georgia Institute of Technology this year. She was selected from applicants throughout the country on the basis of her commitment to academic success, to her local community, and participation in tennis. The $8,000 scholarship will be awarded over four years to students entering a two or four-year college or university.

The College Textbook Scholarship which provides a one-time award of $1,000, was established by the USTA Foundation to assist students in purchasing textbooks or supplies. This year’s recipients are:

· Elijah Reb Mariano, New London, Conn. – Graduate of Saint Andrews School will attend Assumption College

· Ashley Varrone, Shelton, Conn. – Graduate of Shelton High School, will attend University of New Haven
