11-Year-Old Girl Hit By Truck While Walking To School

CRANSTON, RI — An 11-year-old girl was hit by a truck and injured walking to school on Thursday morning. The driver is a city employee and cooperated with police.

According to Cranston police, the girl was walking to Bain Middle School just before 7:30 a.m. with another student. As the pair crossed the intersection of Trainor Street and Gansett Avenue in a marked sidewalk, a pickup truck suddenly turned left, hitting her. The second child was able to get out of the way and was not injured.

The driver, a Cranston city employee, stayed at the scene and cooperated with police. They were cited for failing to yield to a pedestrian in a crosswalk, obedience to a traffic control device, manner of turning in an intersection and vehicle turning left or right, right of way.

The girl was taken to Hasbro Children's Hospital, where she was treated for non-life-threatening injuries and is in stable condition.

On weekdays, drivers are not allowed to turn onto Trainor Street from Gansett Avenue, a one-way-street, from 7 a.m. to 9 a.m. and from 2 p.m. to 4 p.m., which is marked by a sign.

Drugs and alcohol are not believed to have been a factor in the crash, police said.
