122 New Cases Of Coronavirus In RI; 16 Deaths

Urban communities like Central Falls continue to have high percentages of the population that test positive for the new coronavirus.

PROVIDENCE, RI — The Rhode Island Department of Health reported 122 new cases of coronavirus Friday and 16 additional deaths. To date, there have been 14,635 cases of the virus and 693 deaths.

As of Friday, 219 people were in the hospital; 47 in intensive care units and 33 on ventilators.

Central Falls and Providence continue to have the highest percent of positive cases in the state. Previously, Gov. Gina Raimondo said a good marker for reopening is 10 percent positive or less, which that state has achieved as a whole. In some urban communities, however, that number is considerably higher: 26 percent in Central Falls, 24 percent in Providence, 17 percent in North Providence and more. In total, 10 cities have percent positive rates grater than 10 percent.

To help address this, the state has focused testing initiatives in these areas, working to test more people and get them into quarantine if they have COVID-19. Testing volume in these communities is the highest in the state, with 16 percent of the population in Central Falls tested, according to the latest data.
