2 State Police Cruisers Hit In Overnight DUI Crash: Police

One state trooper was taken to the hospital with minor injuries.

PROVIDENCE, RI — Two Rhode Island State Police cruisers were hit by suspected drunken drivers Monday morning, police said. One officer was injured.

The crash happened overnight on Interstate 95 South, south of the Orms Street overpass. Both cruisers were parked in the low-speed lane with their lights on, police said, when a red Honda hit one, pushing it to the left. The vehicle then continued forward, hitting the second cruiser. One of the officers was taken to Rhode Island Hospital with minor injuries and later released.

The driver was identified as 22-year-old Katie Tornez, a Providence resident. She was charged with driving under the influence and refusing to submit to a chemical test. Tornez was held overnight ahead of her arraignment at Sixth Division District Court in Providence.
