At Street Art Festival, Judges give Top Honors to Cranston Students

The wordsย "Global Awareness Saves the Planet" flows from left to right in front of animals that have become icons to represent threatened wildlife: a toucan, giraffe, elephant, tiger, lioness.

Except in this depiction, they're wearing gas masks, orย surgical masks people in some metropolises wear to cut out some of the smog.

This provocative design was by the hands of studentsย from Cranston at the 14th annualย Providence Street Art Festival. And it earned the students on a sunny September day first place in the High School and Environmental category. They also nabbed second place in the People's Choice award.

Cranston High School Westย Principal Thomas Barbieri said the students captured a "hat trick" by winning first and second place in the categories.

The event, sponsored by the Providence Rotary Club, was held on a sunny and mild September day.
