CRANSTON, RI — The Rhode Island Department of Health (RIDOH) are urging people to avoid Spectacle Pond because blue-green algae was found blooming there.

Blue-green algae is a type of bacteria that blooms in lakes and ponds in the summer months when water temperatures rise above 75 degrees. Contact with the bacteria can be dangerous for both people and animals.

Skin contact with water containing blue-green algae often causes irritation to the skin, nose, eyes and throat. Common health effects from drinking water with blue-green algae include:

  • Stomachache
  • Diarrhea
  • Nausea
  • Vomiting

In rare cases, dizziness, headache, fever, liver damage and nervous system damage can occur. People who have had contact with the pond and experience any of these symptoms should call their doctor

People should avoid swimming, fishing, boating and kayaking. Do not drink water or eat fish from Spectacle Pond. Pets can also be affected by exposure to blue-green algae. Don't allow your pets to drink or swim in the water.
