Bear Scare Prompts Lockdown At Cranston Middle School
Hope Highlands Middle School was placed under lockdown after a bear was spotted in the parking lot.
CRANSTON, RI โ Hope Highlands Middle School was placed under lockdown Monday morning after a bear was spotted in the parking lot. The lockdown began a little after 8:30 a.m., school officials said.
WPRI posted a photo that appears to have been taken inside the school showing the bear in the parking lot.

Bears are becoming a common sight in Rhode Island. Residents across the state, from Coventry to Johnston, have reported seeing black bears in their neighborhoods and backyards. One woman in Narragansett had to fend off a bear trying to open her car door, getting into a tug-of-war with it before she started her engine and it ran away.

The Rhode Island Department of Environmental Management recommends keeping any potential food sources such as bird seed, trash and pet food secured and inaccessible. If you encounter a bear in your yard, stay calm, and avoid startling it with sudden noises or movements. Report the sighting to the Rhode Island DEM by calling 401-222-3070.
