Biden, Trump Presumptive Winners In RI Presidential Primary

The Rhode Island Board of Elections is still counting mail ballots.

PROVIDENCE, RI — The unofficial results from Tuesday's presidential preference primary are in. With 91 percent of precincts reporting, Joe Biden clinched the Democratic primary, with President Donald Trump easily taking the Republican primary.

Biden took 61.4 percent of the vote in Rhode Island, followed by Bernie Sanders with 29.4 percent. Trump won the Republican primary by a landslide, taking 93.2 percent of votes. The Rhode Island Board of Elections reported 13,170 votes cast in the Democratic primary and 6,157 votes in the Republican primary.

These totals do not count mail ballots, which are still being counted. Because of the coronavirus pandemic, Secretary of State Nellie Gorbea encouraged all Rhode Islanders to vote by mail, and all registered voters were sent mail ballot applications ahead of the primary.

As of May 31, the board has certified more than 25,000 ballots. Two teams of workers have been assigned to certify the ballots using the voter's driver's license number or the last four digits of their social security number.
