Cranston Primary Results 2020: Mail Ballots Results Are In

CRANSTON, RI — The results are in for Rhode Island's primary election, including thousands of mail- ballots not included in the initial results on Tuesday night. Democrat Maria Bucci edged out a lead in the Democratic race for mayor, while Kenneth Hopkins dominated the Republican side.

On election night, the Rhode Island Board of Elections posted unofficial results based on in-person ballots cast at the polls. Thursday evening, the department updated results to include mail ballot counts. Cranston's results are available online, with vote counts broken down by mail, in-person and emergency ballots.

In the race for City Council, three candidates emerged from a pool of four to move on to the general election in November.

Republican mayoral candidate and current City Council President Farina announced his concession in a statement, congratulating Hopkins and thanking his supporters.

"I love our city and believe in serving the people, it has been a great joy of mine to be your city council president, and I look forward to finishing out my term," he said. "I am not sure what my future holds for me regarding my civic duty, but in the meantime, I am going to focus on my family and grow my career in the private sector. I love the City of Cranston with all my heart and want to thank you, the Cranston residents, for allowing me to serve you. It has been my honor."

The primary results are listed below, with the top candidates marked in bold. The results from the Board of Elections were considered unofficial as of Thursday night, and represent 100 percent of the city's precincts.

Mayor

  • (D) Maria Bucci — 3,807 votes, 49.4%
  • (D) Steven Stycos — 3,644 votes, 47.3%
  • (D) Adam Carbone — 253 votes, 3.3%
  • (R) Kenneth Hopkins — 3,517 votes, 76.5%
  • (R) Michael Farina — 1,081 votes, 23.5%
