Earthquake Rattles RI After Magnitude 4.7 Temblor In NJ

PROVIDENCE, RI — An earthquake Friday morning in central New Jersey sent shockwaves across southern New England, including in Rhode Island, according to the National Weather Service.

The magnitude 4.7 near Whitehouse Station, New Jersey, struck at about 10:25 a.m. A few seconds of shaking followed in many locations across Rhode Island.

Providence resident Ben Edelson said he felt the earthquake while working remotely in his downtown studio apartment.

"It happened at the same time a large gust of wind hit my windows, so it almost felt like my apartment was a hammock," Edelson said. "And I could hear glasses and plates clinking in the cabinets, so I could tell it wasn't the wind."

Edelson said fortunately nothing broke inside his apartment.

"We have received several reports of an earthquake felt here in southern New England around 10:25am. Preliminary reports from the @USGS indicate a M4.8 earthquake was recorded in north-central NJ," the National Weather Service in Boston tweeted.
