Cranston Veterans Memorial Ice Rink--in the bubble
900 Phenix Ave.
Sure, it’s easy to make fun of curling: rocks shaped like tea kettles clattering down the ice, lots of shouting “Hurry HARD” while two people sweep the ice.
But can you play? Now that takes real skill.
And yet, almost anyone can learn enough, after a short evening class, to play a game and have fun doing it! Young, old and in between can enjoy the game together.
Some of the traditions of curling involve broom stacking (also known as going drinking after playing hard); etiquette and good manners; bagpipes at competitions (called bonspeils--don’t ask why a Scottish game has a German term because no one knows); funny costumes at bonspeils (remember The Pants of the Norwegian team?); and some very weird scoring.
Curling is an ancient sport, developed during the last ice age (which isn’t over yet) in Scotland and carried to Canada by settlers. It has slowly begun to drift down across the 49th parallel to the US. One of the oldest clubs is in Boston, but why go all the way up there when you can curl in the center of RI, Cranston, right off Rt. 295 and 95?
Ocean State Curling Club was founded in 2009 by an intrepid group who didn’t want to drive so far to curl. In this the third season, the Club fosters mutual respect among members, friendly competition, exercising body and mind in a cheerful atmosphere.
Join us Friday, October 5 at 7 PM to learn, and Friday, October 14 for the first games of the season. Preregistration for Learn To Curl through the Learning Connection is required.
