CRANSTON, RI — Former Cranston City Councilor Matthew Reilly, who resigned last month after a drug charge, has been charged with sexually assaulting and molesting a child.

Reilly, 41, who represented Ward 6, was arrested Thursday morning in North Kingstown, WPRI 12 reported. He was charged with first-degree child molestation sexual assault, second-degree child molestation sexual assault, and enticement of a person under the age of 16. Police told the television station the charges stem from an incident on May 3.

Reilly was arraigned Thursday and was ordered held without bail.

Reilly resigned last month after Cranston officers found him unconscious in his car after he smoked crack cocaine, according to police. He also resigned as chairman of the Cranston Republican Party.
