Firefighters Battle Granite Street Fire

The fire spread to brush in the back yard and nearly reached another home.

Firefighters from Johnston, Cranston and other areas are battled a house fire on Granite Street in Johnston Monday afternoon.

The fire broke out at around 3 p.m.

Thick smoke billowed from the roof and flames shot out the windows as crews began to attack the fire.

Extremely dry conditions recently caused the fire to spread to brush in a wooded area behind the house towards another home nearby but crews were able to put it out before it reached the second home.

Complicating matters was an inoperable fire hydrant near the house, according to reports.

All the residents of the house got out safely and the Red Cross is assisting.
