More Lane Closures Coming To Route 6

Lane closures will go into place on May 20, ahead of construction on the Woonasquatcuket Bridge.

PROVIDENCE, RI — More lane closures are coming to Route 6, starting Monday, May 20. The Rhode Island Department of Transportation says the traffic changes are needed for construction on the Woonasquatucket River Bridge. Lane closures will affect both the east and westbound lanes of the highway.

Traffic is already shifted in the area for ongoing work at the Route 6/10 connector, having been reduced to two lanes in the work zone. Eastbound drivers will now encounter the lane shift earlier, just before the Merino Park footbridge, while the traffic pattern will extend further than before for westbound lanes.

The lane changes are scheduled to go into place on Wednesday, May 1 in the eastbound lanes and Thursday, May 2 in the westbound lanes.

RIDOT said the $10.8 million project is necessary to replace the superstructure of the bridge, which is just one point away from joining Rhode Island's long list of structurally deficient bridges. An estimated 60,000 vehicles travel over the bridge every day.
