PROVIDENCE, RI — The office of Rhode Island's U.S. Attorney is warning the public about a scam claiming certain people are exempt from mask-wearing requirements. Fake cards have been circulating saying the bearer is exempted from such orders by the Americans with Disabilities Act.

These cards and flyers, which have been widely circulated online, often have the Department of Justice's seal and the ADA's phone number. The department has no connection with these cards nor endorses them in any way.

"The ADA does not provide a blanket exemption to people with disabilities from complying with legitimate safety requirements necessary for safe operations," U.S. Attorney Aaron Weisman's office said in a statement.
