One Of These Rhode Islanders Could Be The Next Lt. Governor
Lt. Gov Dan McKee's transition team released the full list of applicants, who will be further reviewed in the coming weeks.

PROVIDENCE, RI โ With Rhode Island Gov. Gina Raimondo expected to be confirmed as the U.S. Commerce Secretary in the coming weeks, current Lt. Gov. Dan McKee is poised to take up her mantle, leaving an opening for second-in-command. On Tuesday, McKee's transition team announced the list of applicants, who will be reviewed in the coming weeks.
Raimondo's nomination brought to light a previously unnoticed issue in Rhode Island law โ the lack of procedure to replace a sitting lieutenant governor. According to the current law, the General Assembly has the ability to replace a lieutenant governor-elect, but the same is not the case once he or she takes the oath of office.

In response, Rep. Arthur Corvese filed legislation to clear up the procedure, which would apply the same process across the board by giving the authority to the General Assembly. However, since the bill has not yet been approved by the House and Senate, McKee said that he and his transition team planned to appoint his replacement once the gubernatorial transition is complete.

Last month, McKee's team sent out a call for applicants, asking interested Rhode Islanders to submit a letter of intent. In total, more than 60 people applied. The full list was released Tuesday.
"I am heartened by the response we received from Rhode Islanders who are interested in getting involved to strengthen our state," McKee said. "I thank them for sharing their unique perspectives on how the Lieutenant Governor position can help move Rhode Island forward as we roll out vaccines and rebuild our economy."
