Rhode Island Lawmaker Proposes Making R&B The Official State Music

RHODE ISLAND — What genre of music should represent Rhode Island?

If you ask state Rep. David Bennett (D-Warwick), it should be R&B (rhythm and blues). Bennett last month introduced H5122, a bill that would make the genre Rhode Island's official type of music.

Bennett told WPRI 12 R&B's designation would unite people of all races.

"This act would designate as the state music, the genre of rhythm and blues, which contains
2 elements of pop, soul, funk, hip-hop, and electronic music," Bennett wrote in the bill.

If passed, R&B would be added to a list of other Rhode Island state symbols, including calamari as the official appetizer, violet as the official flower, coffee milk as the official drink, and many more.
