RHODE ISLAND — With Election Day fast approaching, the candidates for Rhode Island's second congressional district find in a surprisingly contested race in the deep blue Ocean State.

According to the most recent Boston Globe/Suffolk University poll taken between Oct. 1 and 4, Republican former Cranston Mayor Allan Fung is up eight points against Democratic state General Treasurer Seth Magaziner.

If Fung wins, he'll be the first Republican to serve in U.S. Congress for Rhode Island since Ronald Machtley, who served from 1989 to 1995. The poll shows Fung up 45 percent-37, though Thursday night's debate could give Magaziner a chance to make up some ground.
