The state saw the lowest single-day numbers in nearly two months, due in part to decreased testing over the holiday weekend.

PROVIDENCE, RI — Rhode Island reported its lowest single-day number of new coronavirus cases Tuesday, following lower testing numbers of the holiday weekend. The Rhode Island Department of Health announced 73 new cases and 13 deaths, bringing the state's totals to 14,210 cases and 634 deaths.

Five of Tuesday's reported deaths happened in long-term care facilities, Dr. Nicole Alexander-Scott, the director of the department, said. One person was in their 60s, four were in their 70s, three were in their 80s and five were in their 90s.

No new numbers were reported Monday, since the department gave many employees the day off for Memorial Day. On Monday, there were 79 new cases and 13 deaths, Alexander-Scott said.

Both Monday and Tuesday's numbers were low, the first below 100 in nearly two months. These numbers are due in part to decreased testing, Gov. Gina Raimondo said. On Memorial Day, the testing site at Twin River casino was closed and others saw lower testing volumes. In total, 1,287 people were tested Monday, compared to an average of 3,000 per day last week.
