Roger Williams Park Zoo Welcomes Zan The Red Panda

Rusty, 17, has been alone since October, when his mate Sha-Lei​​ died. The red panda now has a new friend in Zan, from the Seattle zoo.

PROVIDENCE, RI — Roger Willams Park Zoo brought in a new friend for Rusty, the red panda.

The Providence zoo welcomed Zan, a 3-year-old re panda from Woodland Park Zoo in Seattle.

Rusty, 17, has been alone since October, when his mate Sha-Lei died. The World Association of Zoos and Aquariums has a red panda species survival program, which recommended pairing Zan with Rusty.

Zoo officials said Rusty and Zan will only be on exhibit until through mid-June, because the red panda habitat is getting a complete redesign. The construction is expected t be completed by spring 2024.
