Severe Thunderstorms, Brief Tornado Possible In RI Monday

The greatest period of risk in Rhode Island for severe thunderstorms is noon to 10 p.m., according to the National Weather Service.

RHODE ISLAND — A cold front is expected to hit Rhode Island, but unfortunately it doesn't look like it means a break from the weeklong heat — just the potential for severe thunderstorms instead.

Those thunderstorms could start in Rhode Island and much of New England late Monday afternoon and could last until evening, according to the National Weather Service. With the storms, the Ocean State could see gusty to damaging winds, torrential downpours, and even a brief tornado is possible.

While flooding is not expected to be a huge risk, localized flooding is possible in cities and areas with poor drainage.
