The health department and state Department of Environmental Management are warning people to avoid Spectacle Pond and keep their pets away.

CRANSTON, RI — A blue-green algae bloom has been reported in Spectacle Pond, according to the state health department. The health department and state Department of Environmental Management are warning people to avoid the water and keep their pets away.

The warning means all recreation, including swimming, fishing, boating and kayaking, should be avoided, the state health department said. "People should not ingest water or eat fish from Spectacle Pond. Pets can also be affected by exposure to the algal toxins and thus owners should not allow pets to drink or swim in the water."
