Warwick Police ID Victim, Officer Involved In Fatal Crash
The victim has been identified as Warwick resident Brian Adams and the officer as Thomas Paine.
WARWICK, RI — Police have identified the pedestrian and officer involved in a fatal crash on West Shore Road late Monday night. The victim, Brian Adams, 25, was a Warwick resident.
The officer, Thomas Paine, has worked for the Warwick Police Department since 2017. On Tuesday, Warwick Police Chief Rick Rathbun said Paine is on administrative leave pending the investigation, as is protocol.
The crash happened near the intersection of Sunny Cove Drive just before 11:30 p.m. on Monday. At least one other vehicle almost hit Adams, police said, after he ran into the road, directly in the path of Paine's oncoming police cruiser. Adams was taken to Kent Hospital, where he later died.

The Warwick Police Department and State Police are investigating the crash along with Attorney General Peter Neronha's office. On Tuesday, Colonel Rathbun said the initial investigation showed that the officer was not impaired, speeding or distracted at the time of the crash. No other details have been released about the investigation at this time.
